Q-Tip: Meeting Standard 5.1: Learning Activities

Quality Matters Specific Standard 5.1 is “The learning activities promote the achievement of the stated learning objectives or competencies.” 

The purpose of learning activities is to provide students the opportunity to process new information and prepare for exams. In addition to obtaining information through readings and/or videos, Standard 5.1 emphasizes that students must also practice the skills that will later be assessed. These practice opportunities also allow students to receive feedback from the instructor or peers that can be utilized to improve their skills or understanding of the concepts.   

Some examples of how students can practice skills include concept maps, outlines, paper drafts, group or class discussions, practice quizzes, smaller versions of projects, practice presentations or speeches, self-assessments, role-plays, rehearsals, and simulations.

Below are examples of learning activities aligned with the learning objective and exam. 

Example 1: 

Module Objective: Identify the key structures of an animal cell

Learning Activities:

Assessment: Student mastery of the objective is assessed with a quiz that includes diagrams or images of cell structures that students must identify.

 Example 2: 

Module Objective: Compose poems that use figurative language to convey meaning

Learning Activities:

Assessment: Students revise their poems using the feedback provided in the discussion board and submit the final poem for grading. 

 Example 3: 

In this example, one activity is used to provide practice for three skills. 

Module Objectives: 

Learning Activities:

Assessment: Students then take a quiz or exam that requires the student to calculate the mean, median, and mode of a data set they have not seen before.

Coronation Street's Lynn Kennedy confirms her exit from the soap

Coronation Street star Lynn Kennedy has confirmed her exit from the ITV soap following a short stint playing Karen Rutherford.

The actress first made her appearance back in March as her character warned Daisy Midgely about stalker brother Justin Rutherford, informing the barmaid that he's previously displayed concerning signs.

However, things soon took a dark turn as Justin (Andrew Still) went on to attempt to douse Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) with acid, with her pal Ryan Connor unintentionally become the victim as he jumped in to save her. 

Recent scenes saw Karen return to screens on the eve of Justin Rutherford's acid attack trial, where her character interreacted with Daisy before going on to betray her.

But taking to Instagram this week, Lynn confirmed that it will be the last fans see of Karen, with the soap star having already filmed her final scenes. 

Sharing a snap of herself in her dressing room wearing a red padded coat, she wrote: "And just like that, Karen's off. Bye @coronationstreet it's been amazing.'

Lynn's character caused quite a stir in recent scenes as she visited Daisy and her fiancé Daniel in the pub, where she expressed her sympathies over her brother's actions. 

But this was a façade for a cunning plan to help her sibling's case, with a sneaky Karen having gathered information about Daisy's history of manipulating men. 

After winning over Daisy's trust by apologising for her brother stalking her, Karen  overheard a heated exchange between her and Ryan in the pub.

In the argument, Carla Connor (Alison King) defended Ryan as she fumed over how Daisy broke up him and his girlfriend Alya Nazir (Sair Khan).

Two years ago, Ryan cheated with Daisy after she told lies to end his relationship with Alya, before making sure Alya knew of the affair and then ending things shortly after.

After the argument about their past conflict in the pub, Karen overheard and decided to tell Justin's lawyer about their history to aid his court case.

After learning the truth Ryan (Ryan Prescott) despaired that his attacker would walk free from court.

However, it was good news for Ryan as Justin was found guilty, with the judge stating that he would be sentenced at a later date. 

While she's no longer on screens, Karen’s name was mentioned again in Wednesday’s episode, in which Daisy suggested to Ryan that it was Karen catfishing him and pretending to be Crystal in an attempt to cover her own tracks.
