Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge (see below) -- count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the U.S. military. Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB determine how qualified you are for certain military specialties. Score high, and your chances of getting the specialty/job you want increase.

The ASVAB features eight individual subtests:

Subtest Minutes Questions Description

General Science 11 25 Measures knowledge of physical and biological sciences

Arithmetic Reasoning 36 30 Measures ability to solve arithmetic word problems

Word Knowledge 11 35 Measures ability to select the correct meaning of words presented in context, and identify synonyms

Paragraph Comprehension 13 15 Measures ability to obtain information from written material

Auto and Shop Information 11 25 Measures knowledge of automobiles, tools, and shop terminology and practices

Mathematics Knowledge 24 25 Measures knowledge of high school mathematics principles

Mechanical Comprehension 19 25 Measures knowledge of mechanical and physical principles, and ability to visualize how illustrated objects work

Electronics Information 9 20 Tests knowledge of electricity and electronics

Total number of items: 200

Test Time: 134 minutes

Administrative Time: 46 minutes

Total Test Time: 180 minutes

Note: Until recently, "Numerical Operations" and "Coding Speed" were also administered on ASVAB, but have been dropped.

Scoring high on the ASVAB will require study and concentration. Don't skimp on preparing for this test -- read about what you should prepare for, and take our practice test, which gives you an idea of how well you'll score, identifies areas that need improvement and suggests resources you can use.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a test that covers basic knowledge such as math and verbal skills, writing skills, and vocabulary. It is a required test for entrance into the military, but it can also be an indicator for general aptitude skills for other purposes. For those looking to go into military service, the ASVAB score is a crucial indicator of prospective job placement, so it is very important to take this test seriously and to focus on your strengths when taking the exam. Higher test scores often mean better jobs, higher salary, and more opportunities for advancement in the military.

Three different versions of the ASVAB exam are available: The CAT-ASVAB (computer adaptive test), the MET-site ASVAB, and the Student ASVAB. These different versions are designed to suit different needs, so it is important to understand the basics of each test before sitting for an exam.

The CAT-ASVAB is a computer-based exam that is only provided at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) for enlistment purposes. The test is customized based on the takers answers, so if one question is answered correctly, the next one will be more difficult. This exam is timed, although users have the option of pacing themselves throughout the exam. However, it is not possible to go back through the test and check answers or change responses after they have been submitted. The CAT-ASVAB is broken down into 10 subparts, including basics such as arithmetic and verbal skills as well as auto information, electronics, shop, and mechanical knowledge

The MET (Mobile Exam Test) Site ASVAB is only for those who have been referred by a recruiter to take the exam because it is only for enlistment into one of the branches of the military. This exam is broken up into 8 parts and is very similar to the CAT-ASVAB. The primary difference here is that the MET Site ASVAB is conducted with a pencil and paper rather than on the computer. This means that the answers to the MET ASVAB can be changed, but the test is still timed, so it is a good idea to keep track of the time while testing. Also, test takers for the MET ASVAB are not penalized for wrong answers, so always guess and respond to all of the questions in order to maximize your chances for scoring well on the exam.

The Student ASVAB is the most flexible of the exams. It is typically provided to high school students to help them assess their skills, job prospects, potential military positions, or college majors. The ASVAB for students is essentially the same as the MET ASVAB exam, only students are not necessarily testing for positions within the military. The students school counselors examine their scores and help them decide on what to do after graduating from high school. This test is still an important component of a students education because it can help them identify their strengths and weaknesses and help set them on the right track for their future career goals.

Self-Exiled Russian Journalist Added To Wanted List On Charge Of Distributing Fakes About Military

A Russian missile struck a five-story apartment building overnight in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's hometown of Kryviy Rih, killing at least 11 people and wounding dozens amid reports that Ukraine's army was gaining ground after launching its long-awaited counteroffensive.

The adminstration of the city in Dnipropetrovsk region has declared a day of mourning for the victims.

"A day of mourning has been announced in Kryvyi Rih for tomorrow," Kryviy Rih Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul said on Telegram on June 13 after the overnight barrage of missiles.

Live Briefing: Russia's Invasion Of Ukraine

RFE/RL's Live Briefing gives you all of the latest developments on Russia's full-scale invasion, Kyiv's counteroffensives, Western military aid, global reaction, and the plight of civilians. For all of RFE/RL's coverage of the war in Ukraine, click here.

Vilkul said that Russian missiles only hit civilian and infrastructure objectives.

"The six rockets did not hit any military targets -- [they hit] one apartment building and a storage warehouse."

Zelenskiy condemned the attack, saying on Telegram that "terrorists will never be forgiven."

As an air-raid alert was declared for most of Ukraine. The Ukrainian capital's military administration reported that Kyiv came under fire as well, but all missiles were shot down. There were no reports of any casualties in Kyiv.

Separately, Ukraine's air defense system said it had managed to shoot down 10 out of 15 incoming Russian missiles, as well as one Iranian-made drone during the attack.

The latest wave of Russian strikes came as Ukraine's long-anticipated counteroffensive appeared to be gaining some momentum, with the military saying that seven settlements had been liberated in the southern and eastern regions of the country and further advances had been made in Bakhmut amid heavy fighting.

"Both defensive and offensive fierce fighting is ongoing in the east and south of our nation. We have certain gains, implementing our plans, moving forward," said Valeriy Zaluzhniy, commander in chief of Ukrainian forces.

At least 10 people were killed and 25 injured in an overnight Russian missile strike on a five-story apartment building in the city of Kryviy Rih in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region on June 13.

In the area of Bakhmut, the Donetsk city that has been the theater of the war's longest and most brutal battle so far, Ukrainian forces conducted both defensive and offensive actions over the past 24 hours, the commander of Ukraine's ground forces, General Oleksandr Syrskiy said on June 13.

"Our forces continue the defense operation on the Bakhmut front. Our soldiers are [also] advancing on the flanks, where the enemy is losing positions," he wrote on Telegram.

"The national flag is flying over [the village of] Storozhove again, and this will be the case with every settlement until we liberate all Ukrainian land," the Ukrainian forces' press center reported in a message accompanied by a video showing Ukrainian soldiers patrolling the village.

Ukraine on June 11 said three Donetsk villages -- Makarivka, Neskuchne, and Blahodatne -- had been retaken by Kyiv's forces.

Later, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said the villages of Lobkove, Levadne, and Novodarivka in the southeastern Zaporizhzhya region had been taken, although Russian officials said Ukrainian forces had been repelled in some of those areas.

The claims could not be independently confirmed.

Moscow, which has vehemently denied targeting civilian infrastructure despite dozens of attacks that have hit hospitals, apartments, cultural spaces and other nonmilitary structures, has not acknowledged any Ukrainian gains.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow on June 13 posted a video showing what it claims are captured German-made Leopard tanks and U.S.-made Bradley Fighting Vehicles that had been used by Ukrainian forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the counteroffensive was failing and Ukraine was suffering losses 10 times higher than Moscow's.

"Their losses are approaching a level that could be described as catastrophic," Putin said during a meeting in the Kremlin with Russian journalists and bloggers covering the conflict.

Putin, however, conceded that Russian forces were suffering from depleted stockpiles of some military equipment.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive has been complicated by the bursting on June 6 of the Russian-controlled Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River.

Kyiv has accused Moscow of mining the dam and deliberately causing its destruction to flood the Kherson region in the south and slow down its counteroffensive.

Ukraine said 10 people were killed in the region by the floods resulting from the dam breach and that 41 people remained missing.

On the Russian-occupied side of Kherson region, the death toll has risen to 17, the Moscow-installed head of the regional government, Andrei Alekseyenko, said on social media. Russia has blamed Kyiv for the dam breach.

The United Nations has warned of catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the dam breach and resulting flooding.

"It is almost inevitable that we are going to see huge, huge problems in harvesting and sowing for the next harvest. And so what we are going to see is a huge impact on global food security -- that's what's going to happen," UN aid chief Martin Griffiths told the BBC on June 13.

Armed forces of the United States - Statistics & Facts

As it seems, the U.S. will not lose its ranking anytime soon. The U.S. military spending is predicted to increase steadily until 2033, and estimates suggest that defense spending will exceed one trillion U.S. dollars by 2029.

The United States is also the world’s third largest army in terms of manpower, with about 1.4 million active military personnel in 2022. The United States military consists of different service branches, including the Army, Navy, Airforce, Marine Corps, and Space Force. The Army, which is the oldest branch of the U.S military, is also the service branch with the most personnel. In 2021, there were 482,416 active members in the U.S. Army. California is home to the most active duty members within the U.S., with 157,639 stationed personnel in 2021. As of 2022, the majority of U.S. active-duty military personnel around the world were stationed in the United States and its territories, with a total of 1.18 million. There were significantly less personnel deployed in other parts of the world, with 84,093 in East Asia and 67,393 in Europe.

Demographic breakdown As of 2019, the vast majority of military personnel in active duty do not hold a college degree. As of 2021, 888,300 active members held a high school diploma, GED, or some college compared with 194,844 members holding a Bachelor’s degree. When observing the breakdown of race among the U.S. military, it appears relatively diverse compared to the population of the country as a whole. As of 2021, 920,264 active duty personnel were white, making up roughly 66 percent of the total number of personnel. The share of white active duty personnel is about 10 percent less than the share of white people making up the U.S. population. In the same year there were 230,055 Black or African American personnel, making up roughly 16 percent of the total number of U.S. DoD active duty personnel.

In the last few years there has been more diversity among enlisted women than men. As of 2019, 54 percent of active-duty enlisted women were white, whereas nearly 70 percent of enlisted men were white. Additionally, about 29 percent of enlisted women were black, compared to 17 percent of enlisted men who were black. While gender diversity within the military has increased, there remains stark differences between the occupational roles that men and women fill. In 2019, 25 percent of all active-duty enlisted women held administrative positions, a significantly greater share than among enlisted men.

Public opinion According to a 2022 survey, 64 percent of respondents in the U.S. said they had either a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the military. Confidence levels have been steadily decreasing in the last years, with 82 percent reported in 2009. Despite steadily decreasing, the share of respondents reporting confidence in the military is still higher than in 1975, when only 58 percent of Americans showed confidence in the military.

Although general confidence in the U.S. military appears to be decreasing, those who consider the U.S. as the primary global military power has been fluctuating in recent years. As of 2022, 51 percent believed the United States to be the number one military power in the world, whereas 47 percent of respondents said that the U.S. was only one of several global military powers. The year 2010 saw a peak in those who considered the U.S. as a superior military power, with 64 percent of respondents having claimed the United States to be the number one military power in the world.
